The Humanitarian Effort - History

The Humanitarian Effort is an on-going effort to assist indigenous communities in meeting educational, social and economic needs. It has been initiated by indigenous students and educators of indigenous students.

In 1997 students and educators at four schools raised over $3,000 US to purchase an electrical generator, dormitory construction supplies and blankets, school supplies and food for Karen children living in the highlands of Thailand.

In 1998 students and educators raised over $4,000 US to:

  • purchase a boat motor used to transport Sumu and Miskito Indians to health facilities, and to assist with a radio communications project to link villages along the Bocay River in Nicaragua
  • employ a teacher aide, purchase educational supplies, food, sporting equipment and supply blankets for Karen students living in the highlands of Thailand
In 1999 students and educators raised money to continue the employment of the teacher aide and to supply soprting equipment and school supplies. 70 - 80 blankets were sent to the Karen students from Australia, courtesy of QANTAS. These blankets were produced as the result of another I*EARN project.

In 2000 efforts were focused on providing much needed funds and supplies to the Karen children in four schools in Umphang District, Thailand. Scholarships were also provided to enable Karen youngsters to stay in school. Currently, most Karen children leave school at an early age since they are needed to work and supplement their family income. The scholarships were awarded to children to allow them to continue with their schooling. Funds were also raised to continue the employment of the Umphang District teacher aide.
