March Against Child Labour: Melbourne , Australia
March 11 1998

Report by Bairnsdale Secondary College, Australia, students

The march started at 12 noon from the GPO and traveled up to the steps of Parliament House. Some 400-500 teachers, children and parents attended the march which was noticed by a number of people around the street.

Once the march reached its destination at Parliament House there was a few speeches by James Sherry "Amazing" , Tan Lee "Young Australian of the Year" and spokespeople for the Premier and the Leader of the Opposition. Following this was a minute’s silence and the releasing of doves. Once everything was finished people moved down to the gardens and typed in email letters saying that they support the march against child labor.

Each of these letters will be classed as 1km to march across America; 3000 of these will be required and 2,500 to get across Australia. This is part of our support for Broadmeadows Middle School's On-Line March Against Child Labour. So support the march!

March against Child Labour

On Wednesday the 11th of March seven students from Bairnsdale Secondary College went to Melbourne to join in a march against child labour. There were 13 other schools from over Victoria participating in the March.

Tan Lee (Young Australian of the Year), James Sherry (game show host of Amazing) and some participating students gave their opinions about the march and Child Labour.

After the speeches were made some white pigeons were released for freedom and peace to the children working in those poor conditions. After the assembly was made the participating schools and community migrated down to the Treasury Gardens for a sausage free sausage sizzle provided by the Salvation Army and a rest under the garden's trees.
