Child Labor in Agriculture: More than half of the world’s estimated 250 million
working children work in agriculture and rarely, if ever, get the chance to
go to school. The tragedy of their lives and what people can do to fight the
worst forms of child labor are vividly portrayed on a new web site sponsored
by the AFL-CIO’s Solidarity Center. Teachers, students, and others interested
in child labor issues can go to www.fieldsofhope.org
and find out what it’s like for a child to work in the agricultural sector.
The easy to navigate web site has information on child labor around the world,
a quiz to test your knowledge about the problems of child labor, a video flash
on a day in the life of child laborers, and a message center to share information
and experiences with other users of the web site. In addition, there is an extensive
resource section and a teacher’s guide to help integrate the web site into a

State of the World's Children 1997 reports on the progress made
in recent years in protecting children and their rights, but it also condemns
exploitative child labour as "one of the worst abuses of those rights" and confronts
the myth that such exploitation no longer exists in the industrialized world.

for Schools" provides a range of information and activities especially

Department for International Development (Search: child labor; challenging child labor) The website of the UK government department which hosted the Challenging Child Labour workshop in Manchester on 27 - 29 July 1998.
Changemakers: Changemakers.net is about global social entrepreneurship. It is an international non-profit organisation. The mission of the site is to provide inspiration, resources and opportunities for those interested in social change throughout the world.
The April Changemakers explores "How working children are getting organized: bidding for power and respect" with a photo essay by photojournalist Janet Jarman about Bhima Sangha, an independent union of working children that was organized for and by working children in southwestern India. Bhima Sangha was nurtured by Damodar Acharya and his organization, The Concerned for Working Children (the subject of a November Changemakers Journal article). The Journal overview article includes extensive excerpts from Anthony Swift's article, "Working Children Get Organized". Swift provides detailed assessments of Bhima Sangha and the work of social entrepreneur, Rita Panicker, who is teaching India s working children to form their own Organizations.
