THE WARREN PROCLAMATION ON CHILD LABOR
Whereas, over 250 million children around the world are forced to work rather than go to school; and
Whereas, many of these children work in hazardous jobs for little pay or often as bonded laborers; and
Whereas, children are often beaten and punished and forced to endure cruel, inhumane conditions with no chance of a better life; and
Whereas, the number one cause of exploitive child labor is poverty which is exacerbated by the unavailability of universal free public education; and
Whereas, we can reduce the number of child laborers and improve working conditions for children who must work by providing an education to needy children who cannot afford to go to school; and
Whereas, students in Warren Middle and Central Schools are working on a "Child Labor Project" and collaborating to raise funds to build a school and provide a teacher for needy children; and
Whereas, community support will help our students accomplish this goal
Now, therefore, be it resolved that I, Carolann Garafola, Mayor of the Township of Warren, do hereby proclaim that:
The township of Warren endorses and supports the "Child Labor Project" and urges all citizens to recognize the importance of providing educational opportunities to all children and to support the students of Warren Middle School and Central School in this project.
Carolann Garafola, mayor Township of Warren
